Shot Blasting & Surface Finishing

After trimming, castings are finished to the surface your application needs — a uniform blasted texture, deburred edges or a linished parting line — before machining, coating or assembly.

Why castings are finished

Trimming removes runners and overflows but leaves a thin parting-line flash, die-spray residue and uneven surface lustre. Shot blasting projects media at the casting to clean and give a consistent matte texture; vibratory finishing tumbles parts with abrasive media to break sharp edges; linishing uses abrasive belts to blend parting lines on visible faces.

The right combination depends on how the part is used — a hidden bracket may only need blasting, while a visible cover or a part going for powder coating needs a smoother, cleaner surface.

Process

Finishing sequence

A typical route after trimming:

  1. Step 01

    Trim and fettle

Gates and overflows are cut on heavy runner cutting machines (under 12 seconds per sprue).

  2. Step 02

    Shot blast

Uniform cleaning and texture; removes die-spray residue.

  3. Step 03

    Vibratory deburring

Edges are broken and small flash removed in vibratory bowls.

  4. Step 04

    Linishing

Visible parting lines are blended with abrasive belts.

  5. Step 05

    Inspection

Visual check against agreed cosmetic standards.

FAQ

Shot Blasting & Finishing — frequently asked questions

Do you offer powder coating?

[INSERT ANSWER — in-house, through a partner, or not offered].

Will shot blasting affect dimensions?

Blasting removes negligible material; machined features are normally machined after blasting.

Can you match a sample finish?

Yes — share a boundary sample and we will agree the finishing route.
